 Background:

Scientists have found that in humans and mammals, IFN- γ– IRF1 – CIITA – MHCII regulatory pathway in interferon γ CIITA is the "molecular switch" of MHC class II gene expression. Human CIITA gene is regulated by four different promoter sequences, producing four different transcripts, which plays a key role in the regulation of MHC class II gene expression. The signal path mode is shown in the figure below.

Researchers from the Institute of aquatic biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, for the first time revealed the regulatory role of CIITA on MHCII in teleost zebrafish, and confirmed that in zebrafish, IFN- γ– IRF1 – CIITA – MHCII pathway is still conserved. However, two independent promoters P1 and P2 were found in CIITA of zebrafish, which control the two transcripts of CIITA respectively. A series of complex and rigorous experiments were conducted to verify the special mechanism of zebrafish IRF1 in this pathway. The signal path mode is shown in the figure below.
